Course Description
This course is designed to help students to familiarize themselves with the skills and strategies of subtitle translation of comic texts (from English into Chinese). They will learn how to make cultural adjustments in comic texts with Taiwanese terms and usages in order to connect to local audience. Each week we will watch a film clip in class. Students will translate a part of dialogue and proofread the translation as their assignments, and then the instructor will revise their assignments. In the next week we will discuss the translation and revision in class, and students will give their opinions to their classmates. Through individual practice and group collaboration, students will have hands-on experience and reinforce their abilities in subtitle translation of comic texts. Thus, hopefully the results of this course will fit in with the expectations and needs in industry.

電影字幕翻譯有實際的市場需求，戲院上映外國電影，都要翻譯成中文字幕，所以影片素材來齊的第一件事就是找字幕譯者，等到中文譯稿完成才能進行其他後續作業，因此優秀的電影字幕譯者是電影發行界的重要需求，學生練就此項技能將可從事相關工作。

在電影字幕翻譯的領域，喜劇文本可說是最能夠考驗譯者功力的類型，因為喜劇片特別需要本土化或台式翻譯（即台灣當地的通俗用語或台語音譯），搭配流行用語，並恰當使用粗俗用語，甚至有些翻譯已接近改寫，實屬最需要發揮創意的電影類型，如此才能把美式或英式笑料轉換成台灣人更能領會的笑點。

字幕譯者為了詮釋出台灣人懂的外國文化和笑哏，所以需要本土化或台式翻譯，即使不是完全忠於原文，但這種改寫也能表現出字幕譯者的實力、價值和專業，而且會有助於觀影口碑的發酵，進一步還會影響票房。因此，擅長翻譯喜劇文本的譯者，更能達成字幕翻譯市場的需求，在電影翻譯界生存下去。

本課程的授課教師專職從事電影字幕翻譯工作十餘年，翻過幾百部院線電影，包括影史上最賣座的限制級喜劇片【醉後大丈夫】系列。這門課會以有系統的編排和練習，透過老師講解、翻譯習作、譯文修改、課堂討論、佳譯評比等方式，傳授給學生電影字幕翻譯的實務技巧。
